Launch of a new extension

After signing the contracts with the regulator, the extension can be “added to the internet.” The roll-out of a new extension always happens in two phases: a priority phase and a general availability.

In the priority phase, only selected groups may register their domain name. These are at least the (national and international) trademarks. In addition, priority can be given to, for example, local public bodies, local companies and residents. This phase is also called Sunrise (for the trademarks) and Landrush (for the other categories).

After your primary audience has had a chance to claim their domain name, registration opens to everyone. The only restrictions are then the ones set out in the registration policy. This phase is also known as general availability.
