Many millions of domain names have been registered over the decades that the Internet has existed. The largest extension is .com with over 160 million domain names, but .nl and .be are also noteworthy with 6.3 and 1.7 million domain names, respectively. The total number of domain names worldwide is estimated to be no less than 350 million.
One consequence of this is that it is difficult to obtain a short or meaningful domain name. This is reflected in the average length of domain names: for both .com and .nl, it is over 13 characters (not including the extension).
A new domain extension offers a solution: all possibilities are still open. Start-ups, for example, can register the domain name that suits them without compromising. This again is reflected in the average length of a domain name: for .frl it is around 10 characters, for .amsterdam even slightly less.
