From today, for the first time since 2012, it is once again possible to apply for a new domain extension. The deadline for this is the 12th of August<\/strong>: anyone wishing to add a new extension to the internet must submit their application by that date. It is not known if or when the next opportunity will arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain name of <\/strong>domain extension?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can register a domain name<\/em> at any time with one of the many different providers. For example, if you want to secure mynewcompany.com<\/em>, you can have your domain name, as well as a linked website and email address, within an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Registering a domain extension<\/em>, however, is a completely different matter. This refers to the part after the dot, such as domain.yourname<\/em>, rather than domain.com<\/em> or domain.eu<\/em>. This is, of course, more strictly regulated, resulting in more conditions, fewer options, and higher costs. However, it does give you your own unique space on the internet, with all the associated benefits. This project is managed by the regulatory body ICANN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now or (n)ever<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The last time this was possible was in 2012<\/a>. The intention was to open the next application window within a year, i.e. by April 2013 at the latest. To say that this target was not met would be an understatement; a great deal of work still needed to be done to ensure that a project of this scale could run smoothly. Ultimately, the next round is only opening now, 14 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the preparations this time were very detailed, and ICANN has once again expressed its intention to launch a new application round following the current one, experience has made us sceptical. The vague wording of this intention in the Applicant Guidebook<\/em> does not help matters either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We therefore advise anyone with even a passing interest in their own domain extension to seriously consider the opportunities in this round without putting it off. Dotlocal can guide you through the key points in a brief consultation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Estimates of the number of applications to be submitted vary widely. Conservative estimates suggest 1,000\u20131,500 new domain extensions, but we have also heard figures as high as “tens of thousands”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We estimate that the number of applications from the previous round, which was just under 2,000, will certainly be exceeded, with brand and geographical extensions accounting for a significant proportion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, we will only know for certain in the fourth quarter, when ICANN will publish the list of applications for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Between now and August, we will be working on submitting applications to ICANN. Would you like help with your application? If so, please let us know as soon as possible, as it is not advisable to leave it until the deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
