By the end of November, on String Confirmation Day, we will know the final list and be able to provide definitive insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Replacement strings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because during the next 2 weeks, applicants can change the string they applied to their replacement string, to prevent ending up in expensive contention resolution. 1.169 of the 1.615 applications include such a replacement string.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This might be a good thing, as almost 650 applications are identical to another. Switching to a replacement string could solve that issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although some of the replacement strings overlap with the primary strings of others, it is interesting to see that no less than 444 replacement strings are unique. Together with 968 unique primary strings, the internet may grow by 1.412 extensions over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>High-demand extensions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just checking the primary strings, 263 out of the 986 unique applied for extensions are duplicates: multiple organizations applied for the same string. The most heavily contested extensions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>.agent (13x)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>.bit (11x)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>.api, .brand and .hub (10x each)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The biggest applicants<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as in the previous round, Identity Digital is the biggest applicant with 216 extensions. But they\u2019re not alone: the next biggest applicants are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Link Freedom Group with 158 applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>XYZ.com with 139 applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GoDaddy with 77 applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intercap with 71 applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radix with 46 applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese company \u201cJourney to the West\u201d pre-announced 323 applications, but this appears to have been a fake announcement: their website has disappeared and the intended extensions cannot be found anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A lot of dot-brands, where are the local gTLDs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">333 of the 1.615 applications are so-called dot-brands: domain extensions intended for exclusive use by their trademark holder. This is in line with our expectations: dot-brands have a strong business case, which trademark holders clearly recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the low number of geographic TLDs is absolutely not in line with our expectations. Only 15 applications have identified themselves as geoTLDs, plus a handful of others that are not formally geoTLDs but will operate as such like our own <a href=\"https:\/\/dotlocal.com\/en\/twente-application-submitted\/\">.twente<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we started this application round, we were confident that geoTLDs provide one of the most meaningful types of domain extensions. We still hold that opinion! However, the specific geoTLD rules, additional fees, timelines stretching over the average city governments\u2019 lifespan and in some cases national governments that clearly discourage geoTLD applications &#8211; those are all reasons why geoTLDs lag behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">16 extensions have been applied for as community TLD. Last but not least: despite all of ICANN\u2019s efforts towards an inclusive internet, only 21 IDN applications were submitted, most of which are Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>US and the rest<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than half of the extensions come from the United States. Next in line are Malta (the domicile of Link Freedom Group\u2019s 158 applications) and the Cayman Islands (143 applications, including those of Radix and Intercap). In Asia, Japan is in the lead with no less than 61 dot-brands and 23 other extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Europe, Germany and Ireland have submitted the most applications with 46 and 41 respectively. There are 5 applications from the Netherlands and 3 from Belgium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lowest number of applications come from Africa (16) and Latin America (11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants who are facing contention will now decide whether or not to switch to their replacement string, if that\u2019s still possible. They have until the 21<sup>st<\/sup> of October to do so. Four weeks later, on the 17th of November, ICANN will publish the definitive list. This will mark the start of the community input period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next milestone, the prioritization draw, will then take place in the first half of 2027.
